Role(s) Required: This posting will fill Public Board Members on the Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) Board of Directors.

  • There are two (2) Public Member positions to be filled.

Position Description:

Public Member Role Description:

The HRA Board is responsible for the governance of HRA and oversight of HRA Administration’s management of operational and business affairs.

The primary role of the board is to provide stewardship of HRA, including but not limited to:

  • Ensuring accountable corporate governance practices are maintained.
  • Monitoring the administration and operations of HRA to ensure the integrity of financial reports and that the organization is managed in alignment with established policies.
  • Administration of the following HRA Committees: Governance and Compensation, Audit and Finance, Strategic Growth and Breed Improvement, and Regulatory and Licensing.

The board members must provide a multifaceted and balanced approach to industry issues. They are responsible for ensuring decisions are made with the knowledge and awareness of industry benefits and impacts.

HRA is a specialized entity with representatives and interests from many industries (i.e. breeders, racers, service providers, etc.). The public member represents the best interest of the public. Public members bring a unique perspective to the boardroom table, one that is valuable as public members advocate for the interests of the general public and users of HRA services.

About Horse Racing Alberta

HRA is a not-for-profit corporation governed by individuals who represent various racetrack and breeding organizations and the general public.

The mandate of Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) is defined by the Horse Racing Alberta Act, and states that HRA will:

  • The candidate’s ideal background and experience reflect a track record of influential leadership and success in senior-level roles. Previous experience with corporate, government or community boards is desirable.
  • The candidate has a solid understanding of related business and public policy issues, a commitment to good governance and accountability practices and a reputation for integrity, fairness and principled decision making is essential.
  • The candidate demonstrates a consensus-focused approach and ability to work collaboratively with other board members, stakeholders and the general public and HRA Employees.
  • The candidate demonstrates an ability to think strategically about the opportunities and challenges facing HRA and to engage in short, medium and long-range planning to provide high-level guidance and direction for HRA. This may include experience with, or knowledge in, broader public policy that may affect HRA’s operations.
  • The applicant demonstrates an ability to apply critical thinking to creatively assess situations and to generate novel or innovative solutions to challenges facing HRA.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with the horse racing industry is desirable but is not mandatory.

To maintain a broad and diverse board composition, the board welcomes candidates who reside throughout Alberta who have diverse backgrounds and work experience.

Remuneration, Time Commitment and Meeting Location

The majority of the board meetings are in Edmonton and Calgary, but the occasional meeting is held in Lethbridge and Grande Prairie.

The board member opportunity requires a commitment of 15-20 days of accumulated time over the course of a year.

Remuneration:

  • $400 for Board meetings 4 hours or more/$200 for meetings less than 4 hours- no claim of more than $400 per day regardless of the number of meetings attended/$300 for preparation time, if applicable
  • $200 for Committee meetings/$150 for preparation time, if applicable
  • $300 for meeting with travel time of 100 km or more

Board member - If you are appointed to one of the Public Member positions: You must comply with HRA’s Code of Ethical Conduct as referenced in the HRA Policy and Procedure Manual.
