Statement on Recent Race Day Cancellations at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino

Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) is aware of the recent race day cancellations at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino and understands the concerns and frustrations this situation has caused for all stakeholders — especially our horsemen, racing participants, and fans.

We are actively working with Century Mile Racetrack Management and the Alberta Standardbred Horse Association (ASHA) to assess and address the root causes behind these cancellations. The transition from Thoroughbred to Standardbred racing over the past few weeks has presented unexpected challenges for Century Mile in preparing the racing surface. However, as the licensed operator, Century Mile is solely responsible for both selecting the materials and ensuring the racetrack is properly prepared and maintained to meet racing standards.

Safety remains our top priority for both our equine athletes and the people who work with them. HRA is currently gathering detailed information from the affected race days to determine exactly what went wrong. We have been informed that Century Mile’s track superintendent and crews are working diligently to rectify the surface issues and are exploring all necessary steps, including a potential resurfacing, to ensure the track meets safety and performance standards.

Considering this situation, we want to assure the public that our recently updated Racetrack Licensing Rules, including a new penalty matrix, provide clear mechanisms to hold operators accountable for racetrack maintenance standards. If it is found that Century Mile Racetrack failed to meet these standards, appropriate actions — including warnings or fines — will be taken in accordance with our rules.

HRA is also working closely with horsemen’s groups to develop a fair and equitable plan to address the disruptions caused by these cancellations. The horsemen are the backbone of our industry, and we are committed to minimizing any negative impacts they have experienced during this transition.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of all stakeholders as we work toward a safe and sustainable resolution.
