Racehorse Aftercare

Our equine athletes are the heart of our sport. One of the mandates of Horse Racing Alberta is to protect the health, safety and welfare of racehorses. This commitment does not end at the finish line, and we support racehorse retirement and aftercare programs. 

Alberta’s horse racing industry stakeholders are working together to increase resources for retirement and aftercare programs. We all share in the duty of care and protection of racehorses – before, during and after their time on the track.

RACEHORSE RETIREMENT OPTIONS

Public sector bodies are required to post online the names and compensation paid to:

• all board members; and
• employees who earn over 159,676 (for 2025), 159,833 (for 2024), 150,219 (for 2023), 141,183 (for 2022), 136,805 (2021), $135,317 (2020) and $132,924 (for 2019).

This is a requirement under the Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act, which applies to:

• agencies, boards and commissions governed by the Alberta Public Agencies Governance Act;
•  independent officers of the Legislature; and
• employees of Covenant Health.

The postings are required by June 30 each year and will be maintained for 5 years.

CORRECTION: When preparing the disclosure information for 2020 and 2021 only the maximum amounts for employees was considered, while the requirement for all compensation paid to board members was overlooked. As none of the board members earned over the maximum amounts for 2020 or 2021, originally NIL reports were filed. This has been corrected and the amounts are now disclosed below.
