Notice to Horsemen: Implementation of Temporary Import Restrictions

Implementation of Temporary Import Restrictions on U.S. Livestock and Horses Due to New World Screwworm (NWS)

Overview of Restrictions

Following the confirmed detection of New World screwworm (NWS) by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Texas, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (FIA) has implemented emergency temporary import restrictions.

Effective immediately, any livestock or horses that originate from, or have been present in, the State of Texas within twenty-one (21) days prior to their arrival at the Canada-U.S. border will not be accepted for entry into Canada.

Enhanced On-Farm Biosecurity & Inspection

The New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) is a highly destructive parasitic fly. Unlike common maggots that feed on dead tissue, screwworm larvae (maggots) burrow into the open  wounds, insect bites, or navels of live, warm-blooded animals, feeding directly on living flesh. Left untreated, infestations cause severe tissue damage, profound animal suffering, and high mortality rates.

Canadian horse producers and owners are asked to step up herd monitoring. Pay extra attention to:

  • Newborns/Neonates: Inspect umbilical areas and navels, which are primary targets for female flies laying eggs.
  • Wound Tracking: Trainers and grooms, closely monitor all animals with skin compromises, including fly bites, lacerations, and castration wounds.

Dated at the City of Edmonton
and in the Province of Alberta
on this 10 day of June 2026.
