RMTC Opening Spring 2013

Spring has arrived, both outdoors and at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club. The coinciding emergence of spring ushers in the RMTC Spring Meet with six races both
Saturday and Sunday. "We've got a strong Spring Meet lined up," said Rocky Mountain Turf Club CEO Max Gibb. "We'll open the season with six races both Saturday and Sunday, kicking off Saturday's card with two Quarter Horse Maiden Challenge Trials.

"As race fans know this is Kentucky Derby weekend and we'll have all the racing live with our satellite dishes. And as usual our party, with mint julips and the Bully's girls all in fancy Kentucky dress, will be loads of fun." Saturday's fifth race, a $3,400 Mixed Allowance over five furlongs, will include the great Beau Gris from Norm Cutherbertson and Stan Marks' Lyon's Growl, with Scott Sterr returning to Whoop-Up Downs, in the irons.

Sunday is another six-race card, all Thoroughbred affairs.

The fifth race features some fine horses including Jenna's Way and Perfect Honey. Mystical Dixie, trained by Phil Wiest, has the rail. Nellie Pigeau, who had a great spring in 2012 hopes to begin with a winner in the sixth race, Box Top. Opening weekend trainers with horses ready to go also include Jim Depew, Dennis Dorchester and Lyle Magnuson.

"There are some great match-ups opening weekend and with the Kentucky Derby to round things out Saturday we're in for a great time," said Gibb "Our live races go off at 1:30 p.m. each day."
