The best-kept secret in the Alberta horse racing industry is finally out of the bag. Terry Keyko is the new COO of Horse Racing Alberta.

Bringing 30 years of experience with the government of Alberta to the table, Keyko replaces Dr. David Reid, who left the company last July.

Described as a strong leader, Keyko also brings a sports background to his new job. The director of operations for the Edmonton 2001 World Championships in Athletics, Keyko has added experience as a volunteer committee member with the 2002 Edmonton Grey Cup and 2003 Molson Heritage Classic outdoor hockey game.

Calling Sherwood Park home, Keyko is a graduate of Acadia University with a graduate certificate in project management from Royal Roads University.

Introduced as the new COO this afternoon at a meet-and-greet session at Northlands Park, Keyko now begins tackling some burning issues within the sport. From the lack of a Calgary racing venue to declining slot revenue, there are no shortage of tasks ahead.

Check with thehorses.com later today for comments from Keyko.

Background on Keyko - issued by HRA today:

Terry Keyko joins Horse Racing Alberta after more than 30 years with the Government of Alberta.
Most recently Terry acted as Managing Director for the non-profit Rural Alberta’s Development
Fund where he worked with an independent board of directors to develop the organization and
manage their $100 M investment program.

Terry has led the development and delivery of significant policies and programs and has extensive
experience in working with boards and committees. He is well experienced in board governance, is
a strong leader, and has worked closely with government departments. Terry accomplishes goals
by motivation, momentum, a strong governance model, and staying focused on what the
organization is trying to achieve.

Over his career with the Government of Alberta Terry held such positions as Acting Deputy Minister
for Alberta Culture and Multiculturalism and Executive Director of the Alberta Multiculturalism
Commission. His time with government often saw Terry lending his skills and expertise, through a
series of secondments, to a wide range of organizations and groups.

Terry’s secondments have included stints as:

- Director of the Alberta Lotteries and Gaming Summit Secretariat
- Executive Director of the University of Calgary’s Cultural Diversity Institute.
- Director of Operations for the Edmonton 2001 World Championships in Athletics.
- Interim Executive Director of the Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with
Disabilities.
- Executive Director of the Alberta 2005 Centennial Initiative.

A career of working in diverse organizations, with a diversity of Albertans, has taught Terry how to
successfully build relationships and develop collaborative solutions on divergent views. Terry
works to find common ground in order to move forward together, while building a strong team
around him, and engaging available resources.

A life-long learner, Terry holds a Bachelor of Arts from Acadia University. He has also participated
in the University of Alberta’s Senior Executive Development Program and has earned a Graduate
Certificate in Project Management from Royal Roads University, among various other professional
development courses.

Terry has utilized his experience, knowledge, and skills as a volunteer on a number of committees
and events including the 2002 Edmonton Grey Cup, the 2003 Molson Heritage Classic, and the
Canadian Volunteer Initiative.

A long time resident of Sherwood Park, Terry and his wife Debbie have raised a son and daughter
who are now off pursuing their own career adventures. In his spare time he enjoys traveling,
reading, and has recently taken up running.
