Sugar's Play of the Day - March 12 | Print |  E-mail

This Friday evening's 'Play of the Day' comes up right off the bat in Race 1 - a NW 2 Races or $7,500 Lifetime (AB Sired $9,000).

I've always loved the saying 'go big or stay home' - well it's time to go big folks! Last weekend I went a very poor 0-for-3 with my selections, but I've still managed to maintain a .500 average in picking throughout the meet. I had a feeling there would be all kinds of value last weekend, which is why I had no problem throwing out a few more value plays like... Sour Puss - 2nd at 17-1, Mood Light - 2nd at 27-1 and K T Loudnproud - 1st at 8-1. Sure I wish I could have given you those selections as Plays of the Day, but that's the way the cookie crumbles... time to turn the page.

Revoler is a three-year-old colt son of Dragon Again, out of Toplessbottomless by Die Laughing, owned by Don Richardson of Cochrane. This colt gets a juicy 10-1 rating on the morning line and rightfully so. He has yet to hit the board this year and he's not dropping in class, so why do I like this fella coming in off a sixth-place finish at 30-1 against similar? Anyone that has known my way of thinking, over the last while - with respect to handicapping the horses at Northlands, would know that I love the 'first time' Brandon Campbell angle. Revoler is picking up Campbell for this one.

Harold Haining does the training on Revoler and he's had success, in the past, with Brandon hopping on board one of his trainees. I think this mount fits the profile of a horse that's sitting on a solid showing, with some of his better performances coming when he's raced near the top three early in the mile. From Post 3 and a short field of six, I'm thinking Revoler will be heard from early this week.

As a handicapper, driver changes, trainer changes, equipment changes, barn changes... they're all things to consider when trying to find a winner. Being young and competitive, Campbell is trying to make his mark in Alberta as one of the top drivers on the circuit. Grande Prairie has been good to him over the last few years, but he's quickly becoming a fan favorite at Northlands. Just ask the Fun For Fans group sharing in ownership, for the meet, on Starring Role.

When horsepeople are sending out winners, at - what seems to be - an alarming rate, it sometimes seems that everything they touch is magic. Gerry Hudon is off to one of his best meets ever. Trainer Deb Manning's been showing up in the winner's circle on a regular basis. Kelly Hoerdt just picked up his 1,000th training win on the weekend. Bill Tainsh Jr. was live in the sulky with a number of winners last week as well. I guess you could say these are the who's who of 'Who's Hot' right now at Northlands and you really have to consider them when handicapping. There are others off to a solid meet - I just don't have the room to name them all - but you get the jest of what I'm saying. When you're hot you're hot!

The Race 1 Win 3 - try the 345/36/23 for just $12.

See you at the races!
