Saturday's 'Play of the Day' comes up in the afternoon's fifth race at Northlands Park - a NW 1 Race or $4,000 Lifetime (AB Sired $5,000) $7,000 Claimer. Meadowlarks Legacy is a decent looking son of Badlands Hanover, out of the Matts Scooter mare Matts In Town. Owned by Meadowlark Farms of Calgary, trained by Carl Archibald and driven by Brandon Campbell, this lightly raced four-year-old gelding hasn't hit the top three, yet, from four lifetime starts. 'Legacy' will make his third start of 2010 from the rail, morning lined at 10-1. His lowest odds to date have been 16-1 so I'm thinking the value should be there come post time. What I like about him is the fact that he is dropping into a claimer - for the first time - so the competition will not be as fierce. He does have good early speed and I think he's found a spot here where he can step up. Look for the biggest threats to come from (6) Last Chance Buddy (Don Monkman Jr) and (8) Jusluky Norma Jean (Gerry Hudon). I'm thinking they'll both have to come from off the pace, while Campbell may be thinking of sending his ride right down the road. Don't be afraid of the odds - I'm not. He's got a huge shot in here. Last Saturday's 'Play of the Day', Smart Shark, is noticeably absent from this week’s Open Pace. I was right about a couple of things concerning last week's fast class event: Smart Shark was trying to go gate-to wire for Connie Kolthammer and Armbro Dublin never did make it to the lead, however, 'Sharky' was just not himself. Rumor has it that he scoped sick following the race. Here's wishing 'Sharky' a speedy recovery. All kinds of value on Saturday. If you’re into longshots I've got a feeling you'll be seeing a few of them hitting the board on this day. Keep an eye out for Thats Witty (Monkman) in the 2nd, Mood Light (Rod Hennessy) in the 7th and Art By Dylan (Daryl Litke) in the 8th. They may not win, but they all have odds in the double digits going in and they've all got shots at hitting the top three. See you at the races! -copyright thehorses.com |
