It's opening weekend of the 2010 racing season at Northlands Park - and I have to admit it has been tough, at times, for me to handicap these races. I like to go on good form and the majority of these horses in to go this weekend haven't started in over a month. That's why I made sure I got out to see the qualifiers held here last week - I did catch a few things. Let's take a look at Race 2 on Sunday afternoon for my 'Play of the Day'. I'm going back to last week - Thursday, Jan 28 - when I spotted Jusluky Norma Jean circling up from last to finish third in her qualifier - her own back half paced in 59.4 for a mile in 2:04.3. You'd have to look at horses like Neal Diamonique and Stelle Nel Cielo to match that final half speed on this particular day. Need I say more? Owned by Joe Hansford and Harry Martens, this three-year-old maiden filly by As Promised, from the Witsends Fiddle mare Joy Toy, is morning lined at 9-2 and will leave from Post 3. If you can get those odds come post time, I'd say she's a great value play for a top three finish. Trainer Paul Derksen likes her chances. Driver Brandon Campbell is excited to be back in the sulky and he's thinking he's got a great shot as well. The main competition may come from the 3-1 favorite, in Westwood Krissy, from the Rod Hennessy stable. She does show the fastest miles of the bunch, but she hasn't gone behind the gate since late November - I'll pass. I'll go to the one showing form. Get in on 'Norma Jean' to upset the apple cart in Race 2 on Sunday. See you at the races! -copyright thehorses.com |
