Northlands Park track announcer Sugar Doyle will provide a Play of the Day for every live Edmonton harness card. A running tally of his success during the winter/spring meet will be kept at the bottom of each Play of the Day. In his first installment, Doyle tackles Friday's opening night card. When I'm looking for a 'Play of the Day' I'm not going to go looking for a 2-1 shot that 'should' win. Instead, I'm going to look for a horse that can give you the best value and a really good shot at a top three finish. For Friday's card, let's look at 5-1 shot Leadfoot Lefty in Race 6. The three-year-old son of As Promised, from the Cam Fella mare Cinderella Cam, will have to do it from an outside start in post 6 - but I don't see that as much of a problem. Trainer/driver Brent Grundy had success with 'Lefty' in 2009, posting one win, three seconds and two thirds from only seven starts. With a mark of 2:00.1 over GP's half-miler and almost $30,000 in life earnings, this horse hasn't faced an 'overnight' group since last August - he's been battling in stakes action. The morning-line favorite Arctic King comes off a win against much easier and I see this one as being vulnerable in here. If Grundy has his pony ready to set sail, I believe he's the one to beat and the 'Play of the Day'. Best of luck to owners Diane Bertrand, Paul Wood and Chris & Terri Menard as 'Lefty' makes his 2010 debut. See you at the races! Post time Friday is 6 p.m. You can watch the races online at thehorses.com. Online wagering is available through HPI. -copyright thehorses.com |
