Nearly constant snow, wind chills in the -20s and gusts of wind past 30 km/h greeted horsemen throughout today's Battle of Alberta Super Finals card at Northlands Park. The richest day of harness racing in Edmonton in years featured six stakes for $500,000 total for Alberta-sired pacers. And six different barns cashed in with a winner. Here is a breakdown of this afternoon - complete with video replays of every stake race. 1:30 p.m.: Huge upset in Battle of Alberta 4-year-old mares In driving snow, Doober Hoozzitz shocked A PS Money Maker to win the $50,000 Battle of Alberta 4-year-old mares stake. At 21-1, Doober parlayed a stalking trip behind 1-5 favourite A PS Money Maker to win by a length for trainer and driver Garry Schedlosky. "She raced well," said Schedlosky. "We had A PS Money Maker give us the trip." The 1:56.1 clocking over a frozen track is a new life mark for the daughter of Raleigh Fingers. The 4-year-old mares event was the first of six stake finals for $500,000 today. Mother Nature has dumped snow and strong wind on Alberta's capital this afternoon. A winter storm warning has been issued for central Alberta. To watch the video replay of the Battle of Alberta 4-year-old mares, click below.
