Blended Whiskey defeated in $100,000 Western Pace... Crazy show pool in Western Pace... Keith Clark stable takes two $100,000 stakes...

There is no such thing as a guaranteed winner - and Blended Whiskey proved that today at Northlands Park in Edmonton. The 1-5 favourite in the $100,000 Western Pace for three-year-old colts/geldings finished third - but was placed seventh for interference. That created a major-league upset winner and ridiculous Show prices.

Shouldabeensam - a 46-1 longshot - won the Western Pace by three-quarters of a length. "We were hoping for fifth," said driver J.F. Gagne. Trained by Keith Clark, Shouldabeensam only had two wins in 12 starts in 2009 entering today.

Gagne and Shouldabeensam (owned by Clark, Robert and Shawn Smith) winning the Western Pace with the outside trip.

But the big story is Blended Whiskey, who clearly didn't have his 'A' game in Edmonton's highlight harness race. An Ontario import with big speed, he wasn't himself. "He's a way better horse," said trainer Travis Umphrey after the loss. "It wasn't a good day. He didn't race very good."

Owned by Terry Hamilton, Blended Whiskey paced his own mile in 1:57.1 - almost four seconds slower than last week.

BACKSTRETCH BANTER: Almost $15,000 of the $18,000 Show pool was wagered on Blended Whiskey. When he was pushed to seventh for interference, that created massive Show payouts. Shouldabeensam paid $94.40 to Win, $42.30 to Place, $188 to Show. Swiftys First Star paid $6.40 to Place and $34.50 to Show. Outlaw Mister Cool paid a staggering $136.60 to Show.

FINISH LINES: Incredible Beauty captured a thrilling $100,000 Western Filly Pace at 5-1 odds, holding on by a neck. Trained by Clark, she won for the seventh time this year - denying A Special Lady, the post time favourite.
