BIG money, BIG horses, BIGGER stars! Although the lion’s share of stakes purses went out of province, the big show was undoubtedly of local flavor. For race fans, Canadian Derby day was a huge success.
Race enthusiasts found it toughest to wager whether the biggest attraction was the action on the track, or off. But an indisputable highlight for all was the opportunity to meet the greatest female jockey in history. There was no one hotter than Julie Krone.
Rickey Walcott continued to pad his lead at the top of the leader board with another seven victories over the weekend as well as a second best effort in the $300K Canadian Derby. But even that performance could not compete with the magic of Julie Krone.
Four local conditioners scored doubles over the weekend, but Robertino Diodoro bypassed them all with a training triple to bump him up to the top spot once again. Great job, but sadly, still not enough to steal the spotlight from this legendary lady.
With 3,545 career victories, countless records and astounding achievements, Julie Krone broke every boundary and surpassed every expectation to make her mark among the greatest jockeys in the history of horse racing the world over. Since retiring her tack, she continues to inspire and motivate with her unbridled enthusiasm.
Last Friday night, in an emotionally charged appearance, Krone awoke the passion within us. She spoke from her heart, her love of horse racing undeniable and passion contagious. Everyone who had the great fortune of being a part of the derby gala left feeling rejuvenated and inspired. Julie Krone was our Who’s Hot for Derby weekend.
